Why high energies are required to investigate the structure of nucleons?

High energies are required to investigate the structure of nucleons due to their small size. This is because the higher the energy of matter (such as electrons), the smaller their De Broglie wavelength, and so they are more suitable for investigating smaller objects (as the resolution increases).

The reason high energy is requires is because the atoms have large amount of energy and also because the nucleons have a very small size. We need a high energy to punch through the electron cloud. An accelerator needs to be charges at around 4 billion electron volt to punch through the electron cloud, so the conclusion is that, the bigger the energy, the smaller the wavelength.

To penetrate an electron cloud, the frequency required must be higher than that of the one we are studying. In order for the frequency to be higher, the wavelength must be shorter. These conditions are suitable for this investigation because nucleons are also small in size and can give high resolution results.
