Becquerel

Welcome Becquerel Group complete booklet pages 25 and 27 Types of Ionizing Radiation Ionizing radiation takes a few forms: Alpha, beta, and neutron particles, and gamma and X-rays. All types are caused by unstable atoms, which have either an excess of energy or mass (or both). In order to reach a stable state, they must release that extra energy or mass in the form of radiation. Alpha Radiation Alpha radiation: The emission of an alpha particle from the nucleus of an atom Alpha radiation occurs when an atom undergoes radioactive decay, giving off a particle (called an alpha particle) consisting of two protons and two neutrons (essentially the nucleus of a helium-4 atom), changing the originating atom to one of an element with an atomic number 2 less and atomic weight 4 less than it started with. Due to their charge and mass, alpha particles interact strongly with matter, and only travel a few centimeters in air. Alpha particles are unable to penetrate the outer layer of dead skin ...

Sieverts

Welcome Sieverts Group FOR PAGE 25 and Page 27 of booklet (READ and DISCUSS) There exist three major types of radiations emitted by the  radioactive  particles namely: Alpha Beta Gama Alpha Rays Alpha rays are the positively charged particles. Alpha-particle is highly active and energetic helium atom that contains two neutrons and protons.  These particles have the minimum penetration power and highest ionization power.  Beta Rays Beta particles are extremely energetic electrons that are liberated from the inner nucleus. They bear negligible mass and carry the negative charge. A neutron in the nucleus splits into a proton and an electron on the emission of a beta particle. Hence, it is the electron that is emitted by the nucleus at a rapid pace. Beta particles have a higher penetration power when compared to alpha particles and can travel through the skin with ease.  Gamma Rays The waves arising from the high-frequency end of the electromagnetic spect...
